Bertani Amarone, 2006

Wine Rating: 95

The sun was rising as I sat comfortably in the captain’s chair on the quarterdeck of a 48’ Clipper sailboat named It’s Hedly. A beautiful, near-perfect bottle of Italian Amarone wine with rich raisin, spice, and plum notes, was in a decanter nestled between my legs. I glanced starboard and the lights illuminating the pool at the Long Beach Yacht Club could be seen about 600 yards away. A place that, as a kid, I treated like a second home.

The Seduction of Dom Perignon

Wine Rating: 96

“You can put the still water in the cabinet… there.” Kneeling tying her tennis shoe, she pointed to a white oak cupboard, next to a stainless-steel Viking refrigerator.

I looked at her, glancing up at me, but not really noticing me, pointing her finger with a sweeping motion, as if to say, “in that direction.” I heard what she was saying, but they were just words and my attention was completely on her. I noticed everything. Her red painted manicured nails, perfect. Her slender wrists. Her toned arms. Her defined shoulders. Her face. Oh my god, her face. She was striking, and it kind of took my breath away. She wore a white tennis top. Her tan skin still glistening from the tennis lesson she’d just finished. Around her neck hung a delicate gold chain with a small diamond encrusted heart and she wore matching diamond shaped earrings. Her long blonde hair was curled and tied in a ponytail. The small noticeable lines that gathered around eyes flattered her and only helped to accentuate the various colors of blue in her eyes.

Remember, remember the third Thursday of November!

For anyone who’s read any of my work or who’s followed my adventures for any length of time, you know I often find my way back to tales of when I worked at my first wine store. If you’re new to my writing, this is where it all began for me.

When I was in my early twenties, I worked at a famous wine store in the Naples area of Long Beach, California. The knowledge and palate I now have for wine came from my time there, working at Morry’s of Naples. I write about that place a lot, because I loved that job and because that’s where this passion I now nurture was birthed. I loved the customers who asked inquisitive questions about wine, the owners who taught me everything about owning a business, and of course, the items that filled the shelves and I don’t just mean the wine. It was the gourmet cheeses, the caviar, the decadent pastries, the European chocolates. It was Adult Willy Wonka Food & Drink Porn.
